It weighs more than 360,000 pounds, has a 180 foot boom and can lift 200
tons. This behemoth lifts some of the largest pieces of the bridges under
construction on the 64 bypass project. It's the Manitowoc
model 777. Two of these units do the heavy lifting wherever they're needed
on the bypass project. Obviously these machines don't crawl the streets to get
from one job site to another. They have to be dismantled, trucked and
reassembled at the new site. Click the link at the left to see how this amazing
task is accomplished.

This 5,000lb block does the heavy lifting. |
The loads are carried by 1" diameter steel
cables. |
140,000 pounds of counterweights are pinned to the
upper works, straddling the engine. |
Another 44,000 pounds of counterweights are attached
to the carbody, the large frame between the crawlers. Each crawler is
powered by a hydraulic motor mounted in carbody, and connected by a
telescoping shaft. This allows the crawlers to be detached without opening
the hydraulic system.
