In the beginning. . . . . . .
.
Field Day circa 1972 with the gang from
the Cape Fear Amateur Radio Society (CFARS) in Fayetteville, NC. As
several of the club members were serving in the Army, the field day
operation was at Fort Bragg. This is where I got my start. All
right
- front row, glasses and plaid shirt. |

Fast forward to 2005.
Neal, N4HAF, the Raleigh Amateur Radio
Society (RARS) field day chairman, leads the kickoff meeting at the
Carroll farm. |

For many years, Jim, N4CAE and Beth
Carroll, KF4QMR, have hosted the Raleigh Amateur Radio Society field day
operation at their farm near Apex, NC. It's hard to imagine a finer site
for a large 7A operation.
Here's Jim with his tractor in 2001,
rescuing a stuck 40CW truck and camper.

Here's Bob, NA4G, operating his 2008
homebrew replica of a 1930s vintage field day station celebrating the 75th
anniversary of field day. |
A CW op to the core, NA4G is the quintessential brass
pounder. His nametag says it all.

|
2008 - Gary, KN4AQ, set up and coached the GOTA station.

|
2008 - Cliff, AG4XR operates phone on 80 and 15 meters.
Band captain Cliff with other ops turned in a total of 873 Qs - a great effort.
|
From field day 2001, Dave Thomas, K4SAN and son
Joshua, now KF4ZXK, work the RARS VHF station. |
2008 - There's the entire 6 meter band - quiet for now
but E skip brought the band alive on Sunday. Over 180 contacts were made
including CT1FJC in Portugal, EA1GAR in Spain and CY0X on Sable
Island, 180 km southeast of mainland Nova Scotia.

|
2008 - The
fine crew for 80 meter CW. That's Johnnie, WA9SZL at the rig and Wilbur,
WD4RDT, logging.
Although it looks like a 1D operation, these guys are
roughing it with the rest of us at the Carroll farm (well - maybe roughing
it isn't the right term). Luxurious accommodations
provided by Richard, KB4TKQ. |
2006 - All those contacts makes a lot of hungry
operators. We keep 'em fed in style! |
2005 - Some say CW is magic. If that be so, behold
Merlin! Bob, NA4G is a real CW wizard and is practicing his craft on 40
meters. |
2005 - 40 meter phone - Katie, KE4DRL checks the progress as Joe,
KE4DRJ works the pile ups and Mike, WA4BPJ logs. |
This is the 2005 40 meter phone station. The screen room keeps the bugs
out and keeps the bugs in. |
Putting up the inverted V antenna. |
K9DOG - aka Candy - the 40m phone mascot. |
Before you take the screen room down, make sure
everyone is out. |
Start it up! |
Sharon, KD4ACK working 40 meter phone. |
Katie, KE4DRL logging and John,
KI4YXU, a key member of the 40 phone crew.
|
In 2008, we moved the 40 meter phone station
operation inside a van - air conditioned and quiet. Here, Joe, KE4DRJ
operates while Katie, KE4DRL logs. We made 1110 clean contacts on 40 phone
in 2008. |
